Abortion
You need to wait 12 months after the date of your abortion.

Acne
You can donate blood if you are not taking antibiotic. If you are taking antibiotics please refer to antibiotic section.

Acupuncture
You need to wait 12 months after the date of your treatment.

Age limits for blood donation
You can donate blood between 18 and 60 years old.
The lower age limit takes account of national laws on age of consent.
The upper age limit is for the safety of the donor.

Alcohol intake
You can donate blood if there is no sign of intoxication.
Drinking alcohol before donation is not recommended because you would have a greater risk of fainting.
Drinking alcohol after donation can also cause an adverse reaction (faint, dizziness, etc.).

Allergy
You may donate if you are not suffering from symptoms on the day and you are not allergic to the products used to take blood, e.g. iodine, alcohol.
You cannot donate blood if you have a history of Anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis
We are very sorry but sadly you are not able to donate blood.
This is either for the safety of yourself in giving blood or for the safety of patients that receive your blood.

Anemia
If you are under investigation or on treatment for Anemia you must not give blood.
Please wait until you have finished your iron treatment and are no longer anemic.
You cannot donate blood if you suffer of a chronic anemia of unknown case or associated with systemic disease.

Angina pectoris
We are very sorry but sadly you are not able to donate blood.
This is either for the safety of yourself in giving blood or for the safety of patients that receive your blood.

Ankylosing spondylitis
We are very sorry but sadly you are not able to donate blood.
This is either for the safety of yourself in giving blood or for the safety of patients that receive your blood.

Antibiotics
You can donate blood if you completely healed/recovered from any infection for at least 14 days before you give blood.
If you are taking antibiotics you must wait for 14 days after your last tablet.

Arterial blood pressure
You may donate as long as:
  • Your blood pressure is in blood donation normal range:
    • Systolic blood pressure 90 – 170 mmHg.
    • Diastolic blood pressure 50 – 100 mmHg.
  • You are not under investigations.
  • You have not suffered from heart failure.
  • You are not under investigation, on treatment or under follow up for renal (kidney) impairment.
  • You have not had amputation or blood vessel surgery.
  • You have no problems with fainting, feeling faint or giddiness.
  • You have been taking the same dose of the same medication for 4 weeks or more.

Asthma
You should wait 14 days after full recovery from acute exacerbation and cessation of oral or injected steroids.

Asymptomatic Asthma
You can donate blood if you have asymptomatic asthma or on maintenance dose of non-steroid and/or inhaled steroid medication.
Axillary vein thrombosis
We are very sorry but sadly you are not able to donate blood.
