Hospital Admission

The following information can ease the admissions process at LAU Medical Center-Saint John’s Hospital.

Items to Bring with you

Be sure to bring with you on the day of your admission:

  • Identity card.
  • Medical Insurance card.
  • All forms, letters and requests from your doctor/medical practitioner/anesthetist.
  • X-rays and scans relating to your admission.
  • All medications that you are currently taking in their original packets and any current prescriptions you may have.
  • Pyjamas, slippers and toiletries, including toothbrush, tissues, shaving cream and razor.
  • Comfortable day clothes for longer stay patients.
  • Small amount of money for incidentals (e.g. newspapers).
  • Do not bring valuables such as jewelry.

 

Pre-Admissions Process

The physician:

  1. Fills the Admitting Request form for admission.
  2. Includes on the request all specific tests to be done and mention the name of the treatment/procedure.
  3. Schedule patient for surgery.
  4. Discusses with patient/next of kin the procedure performed, risks and alternatives. Fills up the consent form signs it after obtaining the patient’s or the guardian signature onthe Consent form.
  5. Provides information to help the patient/family make the proper decisions.

 

Admitting Officer:

  1. Welcomes the patient/family.
  2. Checks the admission slip.
  3. Checks the patient registration and complete the necessary Information.
  4. Reserves the hospital bed.
  5. Provides the admission booklet and educates the patient/family about patient rights.
  6. Informs the patient about the date and time of admission.
  7. Provides necessary instructions regarding preparations for admission.
  8. Provides information on the expected cost of hospitalization. This information includes:
    • The cost of treatment and procedures
    • The room rate (depending on the type of room selected)
    • The guarantor (self-pay or third party payer)
    • Mode of payment (cash or credit)
  9. Informs the patient to be present at the hospital 48 hours before the surgery to do the pre op exams and consult the anesthetist and if necessary the cardiologist.

 

Pre Op Test
  1. You must be present on the Pre-Op Admission department (Outpatient Clinics 1st floor, Hospital Building) 48 hours before the surgery with the original copy of your Admission Request.
  2. The aim of the Pre Op Admission service is to:
    • Provide information about your procedure and hospital stay.
    • Provide the opportunity for you to ask questions.
    • Streamline your admission and ensure that you arrive well prepared on the day of your surgery.
    • Ensure that diagnostic tests ordered by your doctor are carried out (blood, X-Ray, Consultation Anesthetist, Cardiologist….).
    •  If the anesthesiologist agrees your operation, you will be admitted on the same day of your operation.

3. One day prior to your intervention, the admitting office will contact you to set the time of your intervention and the time of arrival.

 

Please have a list of any questions that you may have. If Arabic is not your ?rst language, please let us know at the time the appointment is booked so we can provide an interpreter if necessary.

Instruction Before your Surgery
  • You must sign an informed consent form acknowledging that you are aware of risks and complications, that you will be receiving anesthesia, and that the surgeon has explained the operation to you. The surgery will not proceed unless the consent form is signed by the patient or guardian.
  • Ask your physician when you should take the last medication dose before the surgery.
  • Ask your physician if you have to stop any medication before the surgery, ex: Aspirin.
  • If you have a cough, sore throat, fever, chills or any runny nose in the three days prior to your surgery, tell your physician. Your surgery date may need to be rescheduled.
  • Do not put makeup, nail polish, acrylic nails, lotion, deodorant, or antiperspirant on the morning of your surgery.
  • If you wear contact lenses or dentures, please remove them prior to your appointment.
  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight during the night before surgery unless otherwise instructed by your physician, including: water, coffee, chewing gum…
  • It is absolutely necessary to refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol two days prior to surgery.
  • On the morning of your surgery, take a bath or shower.
  • Bring with you on your day of surgery any “laboratory/diagnostic test results, X-rays, scanner, MRI…done externally and could be necessary for your surgery.

A responsible person must accompany you.

 

Admission on the Day of your Operation
  • Go to the inpatient admission office located on the GF of the Hospital Building
  • You are greeted by an admission officer.
  • ID bracelet will be applied on your wrist by the Admitting officer.
  • The Admitting officer will hand you your medical record and direct you to the floor.
  • Go to the floor designated by the Admission Department.
  • The nurses and clerical staff will prep you for your surgery and keep you informed of the progress of the OR schedule.
  • We hope that your visit to our Day Surgery Unit is as comfortable as possible.  We do make every effort to keep your waiting time to a minimum.
  • If there is anything we can do to make your wait more comfortable, please ask the Caregiver for assistance.
  • When it is time for the nurse to prepare you for the operating room, she/he asks you to change into your gown; you can relax on your bed until it is time for your surgery.  You will then be escorted to the operating theatre.

After your surgery you must be informed that you will be transferred to another post-op room.

Deposits

In some cases, patients are required to pay a deposit.

  • The Admissions Office will inform you if a deposit is required. If you are not covered by any hospitalization insurance or have a policy that partially pays the cost of your hospitalization, the admitting clerk may ask you to pay the estimated cost of your hospitalization at the Cashier’s Office.

 

The Admissions Office can advise you about the estimated amount of the hospitalization bill and your estimated length of stay in the hospital.

Emergency Department Admission

The Emergency Department is ready and prepared to serve you without delay. When you arrive at the emergency room, the Admissions clerk will ask you or a person with you information such as your name, address, insurance details and about your injury or complaint. Once the Admissions clerk has seen you, a registered nurse (RN) examines you to determine the seriousness of your case. The nurse will advise the attending physician regarding your situation. The physician will see you as soon as possible depending upon the presence of any patients with more serious health conditions.
